Chris Byrne - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Dear All,

It is on the Clubs behalf & with deep regret that I have to advise of you of the passing of Chris Byrne on Sunday Morning.

Chris Byrne's death notice appears in today’s Daily Telegraph.
His funeral will be held on Friday 06/11/09 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Newbridge Road Moorebank, commencing at 10.30am.

Afterwards the procession will move to the North Chapel, Forest Lawn Crematorium, Camden Valley Way, Leppington.

The wake will be held at the Moorebank Hotel following the cremation.

For those who cannot make the funeral or stay for the wake or who just feel like a drink anyway, drinks in memory of Chris are being held at PJ Gallaghers pub at Drummoyne from 6.00pm this evening. All are welcome.

Please pass this email on to anyone whom you think would like to pay their respects to Chris.

Chris commenced at St Pats in year 7 (First Form) in 1968.
He excelled in Cricket (First XI 1971, 1972, 1973) and Rugby (First XV 1972, 1973)
The St Patrick’s First XV of 1972 was the most successful First XV ( 2 losses only) until joined by the First XV of 2007 on that figure.

After leaving school Chris played on and off with the Old Boys, between times playing rugby league and attempting to break into grade rugby at Eastwood.
He played Kentwell Cup in the late 70’s (Grand Final team of 1979) as fullback until his work took him to Adelaide in the early 80’s.

He played rugby in South Australia, gaining selection in the South Australian team to play the All Blacks. On return to Sydney Chris continued his Kentwell Cup career through the mid-80’s before playing several seasons in lower grades and retiring after the Whiddon Cup Premieship in 1989.

At the Dinner to celebrate 25 years of Kentwell Cup rugby Chris was named fullback in the 25 year Dream Team.

Chris is survived by his son, Dean, a former First Grade Rugby league player, and daughter Amanda. His youngest son, Jarrod, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2007. Jarrod had been the youngest player ever to be selected in an Australian open Austag team as well as a very gifted rugby league player.

Club News - Thursday, October 29, 2009

You may have well noticed that the updates aren't coming from your usual correspondent & that is due to the fact that Deano became a father again & has chosen to take some time off work, we would like to congratulate Dean & Jen (Deano held up well under the pressure) on the birth of Ronan Christopher O'Neill.

On the rugby side the Committee would like to confirm that Paul Orland (Lordy) will be coaching Kentwell Cup for the 2010 season along with Matthias backing up again & we would like to welcome back Steve Nicholls (Snix) to the fold. Snix will help run the backs while that gives Greg Michell a chance to look after player recruitment next year . We have also had nominations & will announce coaches for Burke Whiddon & Barbour at the end of next week.

As xmas draws closer it is time to mark the diaries & the first one will be a night at the Horse & Jockey on Friday the 11th of December with your host Sci Walsh taking through the night & then on afterwards if still keen.  For the Veterans of the Club the Kids (Mick & Phil) annual drink will be on the 18th at Customs House in the city.

For those of you getting excited about Armidale the knockout comp is on the weekend of the 14th & before you get too excited the cup is on the 22nd so some strong conversations are currently taking place.

As we draw closer to the 2010 season the committee is starting to look at changes that can be made to the website to get more information onto it, so here is your chance. If you have a wishlist or a good site we should have a look at please email me your suggestions  to me.

The club is also getting in touch with sponsors for the upcoming season & if you are keen or can dob in a mate please let us know.

Your normal service will resume with Deano in a couple of weeks time.

Fisky's Bets - Saturday, September 19, 2009

On such a sad day for the club, at least I can report that our betting kitty ended up at $2100. We started with $1000 in total so not a bad effort if I do say so myself. The $2100 will go to the club.

On Saturday the top three grades played their respective Preliminary Finals with a place in the Grand Final on the line.
