Make sure you get along to support on Saturday. Believe me, you will want to say that you were there the day we won back the Kentwell and Whiddon Cups.
It would be good if supporters could band together to ensure maximum effect is had on the day. Whilst no specific spot has been nominated as yet, we would hope that Club supporters are in black and gold and group together on the Clubhouse side of the ground.
Teams for Saturday are attached.
Kentwell
A 25-21 victory. The evolution of 1's this past month has been phenomenal. Needing to win their fourth consecutive do or die match to stay alive in the competition the boys did just that. In a seesawing, and heart -stopping affair the good guys were able to stick their noses in front with 10 minutes to go and through absolute desperation were able to keep it there until the final whistle.
Going into this game as underdogs, the boys were not only up against the three time defending Premiers but also history, which if my memory serves me correctly, had seen the Club only knock off Drummoyne twice previously in first grade since their promotion to First Division in 1999.
Running with the wind in the first half, the good guys went behind by a converted try early but through continued pressure began to accumulate points. With the good guys leading 13-11 at the break, the lead was to change hands no less than four times during the second half. This lead swapping was punctuated with some spectacular play from the boys including a long range try (involving a couple of forwards completely out of position throwing impressive passes) which had the Black and Gold army out of their seats.
Trailing 18-21 deep into the second half some inspired play on the back of continuous possession saw a try inches inside the left hand corner post to yet another forward out of position. The spectacular conversion from touch (this time by a back - no surprise here) saw 1's build a four point buffer which, as much as they tried, was not to be overcome by Drummoyne.
1's are now through to their first decider since 2005 and will meet the same foe from that day, Knox. A victory will see the Club secure our first Kentwell Cup since 1993.
Burke
This hurts. A 7-25 loss means that 2's will need to console themselves with cheering on 1's and 3's this weekend. Trailing 7-10 at the break the good guys were unable to convert early second half pressure into points and were soon trying to work their way out of their own end into, what seemed like, a gale.
Two late-ish tries blew the score out but 2's will be disappointed that such a promising but inconsistent season ended short of the ultimate goal.
Whiddon
The Minor Premiers got back on track with a convincing 14-7 win. Whilst there was only one try in it at the end, 3's dominated for large periods of the match and arguably should have won by more, a late try by Iggies brought the score closer. 3's acknowledge that a step up is required this weekend when they face Colleagues.
Apologies for the brief match summary here but your author was occupied for much of this match. I have it on good authority that the above is true.
Interestingly, this will be 3's third Grand Final appearance in four years with the boys looking for our first Whiddon Cup since 2000 (that was a bit of a guess, my memory is not what it used to be, but I think that it is pretty close). This will be the fourth time that the teams have met this season with the good guys looking to square the ledger at two wins apiece, and avenge the 2006 GF defeat at the hands of the same opponent.
Post Match
All and sundry are invited to attend the post match celebrations at the Horse and Jockey hotel, one of the stable (pardon the pun) of hotels owned by long time club sponsor, Laundy Hotels.
Note that the Bledisloe will be on the big screen from 5.30 with the league to follow.
SCG Membership
For sale: Sydney Cricket Ground Gold membership. (Gold membership allows entry to the SCG and SFS, plus the Gym and pool areas as well) Old Boy John Donnellan (JD) is, reluctantly, putting his membership up for sale. This has arisen due to some unforeseen family medical expenses, which will be on-going. With the current waiting list for SCG memberships being 15 years this is an opportunity that comes along rarely. The cost will be negotiable but below market price. If anyone is interested in purchasing this membership ring JD on 66804928 or email jddonna@aapt.net.au

2009 Major Sponsors
St Patrick’s Rugby Club would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support.

Long time subscribers will note that your author refrains from heaping praise on individuals, believing that any success we have, we have as a Club (and for the fact that those who know me well would appreciate that it would be tough for me not to rabbit on about personal exploits once I opened the floodgates). However the following achievement is well worth noting.
Shane McLeod, 1's flanker, has been named as a Finalist for the Suburban Rugby Medal, which recognises the best players in each Division. The winner is to be announced at the Suburban Rugby Presentation Night in early October. Good luck Shane.
Any masochists out there? If so, be sure to register your interest in becoming a coach for the 2010 season.
Finals Photos
2's players may not find this item of interest but here goes:
A professional photographer was on hand on Saturday and will be this weekend also. Go to: http://sites.google.com/site/picndrive, be sure to check out the photo of the match winning try in Kentwell. Bulk orders can be arranged by the Club which in turn will receive a kick back from the photographer.
These images will be for sale by Visa or Mastercard for $20 per image.
St Kilda Jersey
Look out for the new addition to the Clubhouse wall. Long time sponsor of the Club, Homebush Export Meats (HEM) met up with Lenny Hayes #7 from St Kilda recently. Lenny was happy to sign a jersey for HEM, which has been generously donated to the Club (see attached). Apparently, Lenny has had a distinguished career, is an All Australian and former captain of St Kilda.
If you happen to be in any state to watch the AFL GF (remember it is on the day after Presentation Night) you may wish to give Lenny a cheer.
